Antiques

Having a very rich Ottoman Culture, Turkey has lived together with the minorities up today and influenced by various cultures. These cultural relations have reflected to furniture as in all aspects. Especially the rising trend of antiques on home decoration after 1980s caused exchanges of antiques. Many antiques and old objects have been picked from the dusty shelves, restored and got their place on the decoration. When gazing at Antique dealers in Turkey you can get rid of a misunderstanding. When everything changes with a rattling speed, in this culture you may see objects of 60-70 years old are also considered as antique. However in order to name an object as antique it should have some special aspects. One of those is of course its being a rare piece of its time.

Wooden furniture produced by Greek, Ottoman, Armenian and Syriac masters is carrying the best examples of woodwork. Although it is getting harder to find such pieces it is possible to meet rare pieces on some antique shops. Don't forget to bargain when purchasing an antique and if you plan to take the object abroad learn your legal obligations for it is forbidden to take away some pieces out of Turkey borders. Therefore please note that: Explicit authorization is needed for the purchase and/or removal of Turkish antiquities and other cultural artifacts. A receipt and the official "museum export certificate" are needed to legally export such an item.

Addresses of many antique shops in Ankara at which you will enjoy shopping are in our yellow pages. By the way don't miss to drop the first Antique Market of Turkey, set in Ayrancı on first Sunday of every month. Meanwhile don't miss Antique auctions organized from time to time. You'll enjoy a lot.
