Atlı Köşk - The Equestrian Villa

Sultan Abdülhamid II bestowed the site where the museum stands today, to Prince Nikolai of Karadağ and it served as the Karadağ Embassy until 1913. Prince Mehmet Ali Hasan the grand son of the Khedive purchased this territory in 1923 and had a new pavilion built to architect Eduard de Nari. Princess İffet, the elder sister of the prince moved here in 1944 together with her daughters and cousins.
Hacı Ömer Sabancı the founder of Sabancı saga purchased this pavilion in 1951 when he decided to move his business and residence from Adana to İstanbul. When he put a bronze horse sculpture he bought from an auction and which is made in Paris the pavilion was called Atlı Köşk (The Equestrian Villa).
This historical structure served as the residence of Sakıp Sabancı family until 1999 and then turned over to Sabancı University with its valuable furniture and works and garden for 49 years.
All necessary infrastructures are being prepared in order to upgrade this valuable building to world museum standards. The buildings have designed taking into consideration the visitor groups of disabled, children and aged and services such as elevator and disabled toilet is provided.
A gallery was built in the garden to host international exhibitions. This building is quite simple and transparent and has been drew back not to spoil the historical view.
