Just opposite of Haghia Sophia rests the Yerebatan Sarayı (Basilica Cistern). Probably the most visited cistern in the world, the immense interior is spectacular, even with colored lights, piped-in music, a cappuccino bar, a gift shop, and occasional concerts. It was built by Byzantine Emperor Justinianus in the 6th century. It was called the basilica cistern because the "trade basilica" stood on the ground above.
Yerebatan cistern covers an area of 140 x 70 meters, containing up to 80.000 cubic meters of water and is one of the most important Byzantine works that have survived up to date. 336 massive Corinthian columns, two of which have heads adorned with Medusa heads, support the immense chambers' fine brick vaulting.
It was also used by Ottomans, for collection and storage of water had always been one of the serious problems of Istanbul (even today).
A few years ago, Yerebatan cistern was emptied down to a meter deep, and a walkway has been built inside turning the cistern into a very interesting tourist attraction. One of the most interesting things about this cistern is the fact that some stones used are brought from other historical structures.
