Bridge

 Untitled Document

Bridge player and author Allen Truscott stated in an article published in the New York Times in 1999 that bridge was born in Istanbul and added that Turks however could not maintain the game they have created. It is believed the card game was named after the Galata Bridge, which spans the Golden Horn and links old and new Istanbul. British and Turkish civil servants in the British Embassy in Istanbul invented bridge in the 1860's, deriving from a game called "Whist". The instruction CD of American Contract Bridge League begins with a beautiful view of the Galata Bridge.

Recently bridge has become one of the favorite hobbies of the young retired women in Turkey. Many bridge clubs have been founded, and these clubs are quite successful both in instruction and in organizing bridge tournaments.

Those who wish to learn bridge or wish to improve their bridge can contact the bridge clubs listed in the Yellow Pages.
