Café des Cafés

by Zeyda Üstün

Breakfast in Cafè des Cafès:
After leaving Ankara, where I spent my school days, and moving to Istanbul in the 1980s, I did not return for a long time. When I visited Ankara in the mid-1990s, neither Ankara nor I remembered each other. The town had gained a different face in fifteen years. The places we used to go had disappeared and quite different spots had opened. Cafè des Cafes is a cafè which during my time in Ankara was at the end of Tunalı Hilmi and now is in the middle of the avenue.

One of my French friends described the cafè as “the best coffee-maker in Tunalı” in 2001 and I was very happy to discover the back lounge of the cafè. Away from the uproar of Tunalı and overlooking a verdant garden, it is a place where you can read your book or newspapers accompanied by a cup of coffee or a delicious dish from the menu.

This salon also hosts long Sunday breakfast. I especially did not use the word “brunch” because they serve classical Turkish breakfast. Tea in small clear glasses, cheese varieties such as white, kaŞar, tulum and Çerkez, colorful jams, green and black olives, butter, honey, cream, tomatoes, cucumber, salami (both meat and chicken), various kinds of bread, börek and cakes. Needless to say that muesli, the favorite healthy meal of people living in the metropolis, is also served.

Well, after ten o'clock, take your book and newspapers with you and go to Cafè des Cafes and enjoy a Sunday breakfast. Afiyet olsun!!!
