Dams
Bayındır Barajı (Bayındır Dam)
Built in 1965 and 13 km from the city center via the Samsun highway, Bayındır
dam offers a swimming pool, restaurant and camping areas.
Çubuk Barajları (Çubuk Dams)
Çubuk-1 was the first concrete dam of the Republic as well as the first dam
in Ankara and was built in 1936 to supply drinking water to the city. After
long years of service, the dam began to erode, filling the dam lakebed and it
was almost taken out of service. The dam, 12 km. from the city center was once
considered to be far out of the city, but now it is incorporated with the Municipality.
Take the road to the airport and follow the Çubuk signs. Full grown pine forests,
still attracts large crowds for weekend picnics. Çubuk-2 was built in 1964 is
still in service.
KesikköprüBarajı (KesikköprüDam)
It is located about 75 km south of Ankara. Take the road to Konya and turn left
for Bala (app. 20 km. after Gölbaşı) and follow the Kesikköpru signs. You'll
soon reach the dam. It has a cozy artificial lake, which is a very popular swimming
place and you can also rent boats here and row across the lake.
Kurtboğazı Barajı (Kurtboğazı Dam)
Kurtboğazı was built in 1967 in response to the rising city population demands
on the existing infrastructure. It is located on the Istanbul highway about
50 km away from the city. It is an excellent place to escape the city's crowd
and for relaxation. There is also a private establishment offering a swimming
pool, recreational activities and a restaurant. The dam also provides opportunities
to fish and do other water sports.
Lakes
Ankara is surrounded with natural and artificial lakes. Although,
most of them are located on the south of the city, they all provide a sense
of the seaside to their visitors.
Eğmir Gölü(Lake Eğmir)
A very nice lake outside Ankara on the Konya highway. 500 meters after the Ýstanbul
entry, turn right and follow the signs for Eğmir Gölü. Its grounds
are part of Middle East Technical University (METU) campus.
Therefore car admittance into the grounds is limited to the people associated
with METU. The road surrounding the lake is about 12 km. To obtain a pass, you
need to contact the METU Sports Department. Beautiful grounds and a few restaurants
assure pleasureable time for those who wish to take advantage of this place.
Flowing melted snow water from Elmadağ is the main source
feeding Eðmir. Although it is much deeper compared to lake Mogan (Gölbaşı),
less snow falls here during the winter and streams feeding the lake tend to
disappear, cause it to dry-out during the hot summer months.
Karagöl (The Black Lake)
Karagöl is 50 Km., from Ankara and located near the town of Çubuk.
It is a very deep crater lake, surrounded by pine forests and a lovely relaxing
environment. You need to take the highway to the airport and follow the yellow
signs to reach Karagöl.
Gölbaşı – Mogan (Lake Mogan – Gölbaşı)
It is the largest lake in Ankara and it is also a man-made lake. It is located
near the district of Gölbaşı, on the Konya/Adana highway, 20 km. away from the
city. Numerous restaurants steal the majority of the shoreline. Unfortunately,
this location has been spoiled over the years with overpopulation, large mosquito
colonies, and pollution along the shores. Despite this however, on a sunny day
it can still be an attractive option.
Dikilitaş Gölü(Lake Dikilitaş)
Dikilitş is 55 km away from the city center and located in Dikilitaş village
on the Haymana highway. It is the cleanest lake in Ankara and an ideal place
for fishing and camping. The freshwater fish are plentiful and you can enjoy
cooking them over a campfire.
