The museum is open between 11:00 and 18:00 from Tuesday to Sunday and entrance is free.
The Doğançay Museum is Turkey's first personal contemporary art museum. It is housed in a historic 150-year-old five-story building located at Beyoğlu. Burhan Doğançay purchased it in 1999 and following a four-year renovation, it was restored to its former glory and its interior converted to meet exacting museum standards. The museum officially opened to the public in 2004. More than 150 works of Burhan Doğançay are on display and one floor has been set aside for the works of his father, Adil Doğançay.
When you enter the museum the hand woven Aubusson tapestry on your right based on one of his "Ribbon" paintings meets you.
The best way to tour the museum is to start from the top floor where you can reach with a lift and walk down. The 3rd floor features paintings Doğançay did as a student in Paris in the 1950s as well as works by Doğançay's father, Adil, and his personal belongings. Father Doğançay was a soldier as well as a good artist and his paintings carry characteristics of impressionism and are composed of oil paints of country and sea landscape.
The 2nd floor features his latest works from "ribbons" and "walls". There are also a number of Doğançay shadow sculptures and photographs.
Some of his special works on the "walls" and "doors" are on display on the 1st floor.
A small café that serves Turkish coffee and tea is at the entrance floor. This floor also have the artist's photos printed in big water paint papers.
At the basement floor of the museum, there is an art studio where all types of brushes and colors are available for the students. Burhan Doğançay mostly spends his days in the museum when he is in Turkey. The children working with the artist catch the opportunity to express themselves via the art at an early age.
Burhan Doğançay's books, all of which were published abroad are on the reception desk. Unfortunately they are not available at the bookstores in Turkey, however you can purchase them through Amazon.
The museum is open everyday between 11:00 and 18:00 and entrance is free.
