Grocer
Small grocers, or
bakkals, are located in almost every corner of the city. They sell such things as milk, bread, cheese, and tobacco along with all sorts of biscuits, candy, chewing gum etc.. They are typically used on a daily basis to pick up the odd items missing from your pantry, instead of having to make a trip to a larger grocery store. Bakkals usually opens at 6:30-7:00 and close between 22:00 and 23:00 depending upon neighborhood demand. Fresh warm bread directly from the bakery arrives typically each morning at the bakkal. Try to remember to strike up a friendly conversation (about the weather, children or football matches) with the bakkal owner. Even if you only speak a few words of Turkish, your efforts will be greatly appreciated and you will gain a greater sense of community as you forge some relationships with local shopkeepers.
