Hidiv Kasrı (Hidiv Pavilion), the residence of Abbas Hilmi Pasha, the Khedive of Egypt, was built by the Italian architect Delfo Seminati in 1907. It was built with European style and measures approximatley 1000 sq.mt and is located in a large grove (Hidiv Grove) above Çubuklu at the Anatolian side of the Bosphorus.
The gigantic trees in the grove have tags identifying them. Their cool shadows provide relief on even the warmest days of Istanbul. The grove hosts the biggest rose garden in Istanbul and presents a lovely backdrop for an enjoyable breakfast on the weekends or for a 5 o'clock tea. A monumental fountain stands at the main entrance of the building. High ceilings are covered with a gorgeous stained glass window. Elegant pools and fountains can be seen throughout the building.
The builidng houses a tower from which half of the Bosphorus can be seen. This tower has a middle floor with balcony and an open terrace, both can be reached either by lift or climbing the stairs if you trust your breath.
The mansion was sold to the Istanbul municipality in the 1930s after the Khedive's left the country, however was not in service until 1982. It was renovated by Türkiye Turing ve Otomobil Kurumu and put into service in 1984 as hotel, restaurant and café then it was transferred to the Istanbul Municipality. It no longer operates as a hotel. Please note that as in every café or restaurant run by the Municipality no alcoholic beverages are served.
