The name of the city is said to be come from “Adanus”, according to mythology the son of Kronus (God of Weather).
As a result of being in the center of that fertile area, Adana has been an important city of many civilizations for centuries back to 6000 BC. The Seyhan River is spanned by an ancient bridge, Taşköprü (Stone Bridge), built by Hadrian and then repaired by Justinian. It is worth noting to build a 300-yard long stone bridge in Roman times was a real act. Only 14 of 21 original arches of the bridge stand of up to day. There are many interesting places in Adana worth to visit. 16th century Ulu Camii (Great Mosque), Eski Camii (Old Mosque), Hasan Ağa Mosque, Saat Kulesi (the clock-tower), an old covered bazaar, Ethnographical Museums where Turkish carpets, swords, tombstones etc. are exhibited and Archeological Museum are all of interest.
Adana is also famous for its delicious Adana Kebap. After a day of sightseeing you can sample Adana kebab a sensational spicy tube of ground meat. Local beverages include şalgam, a drink made from dark turnips and şıra, a type of grape juice.
The teahouses and restaurants alongside the Seyhan Dam and Lake provide a cool and perfect view of the city and the river at sunsets. The Seyhan Dam Lake north of the city have shady walks and pretty tea gardens and restaurants creating a cool place to escape from the hot summers of the city.
Yumurtalık (84 km away) and Karataş (50 km away) are the nearest natural beaches with proper accommodation. There is an ancient harbor castle in Yumurtalık contributing much to this pretty fishing town. The Çamlık Park 30 km southwest of Adana with the variety of animal species, the thermal water springs and the plantation coverage over the Taurus Mountains attracts attention, Göksu River and a snaky course in the Feke area is the center of rafting tourism. The thermal springs of Acısu in Aladağ, Tahtalıköy and Kokarpınar in Ceyhan and Alihocalı and Kurttepe are the ones close to Adana.
While traveling from Adana to İskenderun near Yakapınar lies Misis, a city that derived its wealth from its position on the Silk Route. There are several Roman ruins at the site, including a beautiful fourth century mosaic depicting Noah' s Ark and animals. Further along the road are the impressive ruins of the YılankaleCastle on a top of a rocky peak dominating the Ceyhan River.There is also an open-air museum containing many remnants.
Karsan Forest, Bürücek, Tekir, Horzum, Zorkum meadows are ideal for picnic and resting.
Adana is a big tourism center with its high potential matching the standard of four seasons and twelve months of tourism".
