If you are believe valuable things come in small parcels be sure to visit the Mosaic Museum. It somehow preserves its gorgeous contents from evil eye with its modest building. You may feel you are in a Byzantium Palace while wandering around the mosaics since the museum is built over the ruins of the Great Palace built by Justinianus I, which is placed just behind Sultanahmet (Blue) Mosque.
The Great Palace mosaic was the largest and the most beautiful landscape in antiquity (VI. century A.D). The building is the one and only example of late antiquity with a tessellated pavement of comparable size and excellent workmanship. It was made by the best craftsmen under the surveillance of a master artist. The pavement is composed of many colored lime, terracotta and glass cubes of 5 mm. One square meter of floor space consumed about 40.000 cubes, which makes for 80.000.000 tesserae for the entire area. The mosaic was made in fragments but composed in such a way so it is one of the most magnificent compositions from antique mosaic art.
