The decoration of movie theaters has also changed alongside improvements in technology and comfort. Some have poufs to rest your feet on, while some have adjustable seats. The jury of the daily Hürriyet newspaper, composed of movie writers and movie enthusiasts, has chosen the ten best movie theaters in Turkey.
Emek Movie Theater
This movie theater was opened on YeŞilcam Sokak, Beyoğlu in the 1920's as "Melek
Sineması"Emek has been hosting the International Istanbul Film Festival
for 23 years. The rococo and baroque style ceiling is stunning. The theater
was renovated in 1993. There are 875 seats, and the balcony seats have not been
changed since 1958. Four-channel digital extra surround system is available.
The screen is 10 meters by 10 meters. Reservations are not made and credit cards
are not accepted. Mondays and Thursdays have discounted screenings. A discount
is also applied to the elderly (60+) and the disabled at all screenings.
Profilo Odeon Cineplex
It is located in PAM (Profilo Shopping Mall), Mecidiyeköy and was opened in
1998. There are 456 seats in seven halls. All halls have Dolby digital audio
system, giant convex screens and stadium-seating. The ushers kindly request
that you put a donation into AÇEV boxes instead of tipping. Phone reservations
and special aisle seats for wheelchairs are available. Tuesdays and Thursdays
are discount days. The ticket price is higher on weekends.
Feriye, Ortaköy
The building, which was once the stable of Çırağan Palace, has hosted the Feriye
movie theater since 1996. Three halls have a total of 382 seats. Dolby digital
surround system is available. The screen is 4 x 8 meters. The wooden ceiling
is authentic. You can sip your coffee or tea and read newspapers and magazines
at its cafè in the foyer overlooking the Bosphorus. The discounted day is Thursday.
Tepe Cinemaxx
This movie theater opened in the Kadıköy Tepe Nautilus shopping mall in November
2002. The complex has 8 halls with 1,224 seats in total. Dolby digital surround
system is available. The VIP hall has a screen with dimensions of 7.5 m x 3.5
m and 30 leather-covered adjustable seats. Tickets are discounted on Wednesdays,
and the ticket price is higher on weekends.
Alkazar, Beyoğlu
The reason this old movie theater in Beyoğlu is on the list is that they show
European films of artistic value. There are three halls and 438 seats in total.
Dolby digital system is available. The building has been renovated. Wednesdays
have discounted ticket prices.
Dolmabahçe Cinebonus
It was opened at G-Mall, which is past the Dolmabahçe Funfair, in December 2003.
The complex has six halls and 638 seats in total. It also has two-person seats
and poufs for the front seats. The audio system is Dolby digital. Free car parking
is available. Lately, the gala premières of popular films often take place at
Cinebonus. Mondays are discounted.
BüyülüFener
BüyülüFener is located in Bahçelievler, Ankara and has four halls named after
Turkish film stars. The total number of seats is 601. Dolby digital audio system,
buffets and cafès in the foyers, car parking and a lift for the disabled are
among the facilities. Discounted screenings are held on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Phone reservations are available, and tickets can be purchased via the internet.
CineBonus
CineBonus is in the 5M Migros Shopping Mall in Antalya. The total number of
seats is 1100 in eight halls. Each hall has stadium-seating and adjustable two-person
seats. The audio system is Dolby digital in three halls and Dolby in five halls.
There are three buffets in the foyer. Reservation is available by phone. Monday
is the day when tickets are discounted.
Tepe Cinemaxx
Cinemaxx is in the M1 Tepe Shopping Mall in Adana and has seven halls. The foyer
covers an area of 2,400 m2. The names of the stars of films seen by more than
1,000,000 viewers are written on plaques hanging from a 2.2 m. high totem-like
tree standing in the middle of the foyer. Phone reservations are available until
the final 30 minutes before the performance. Wednesdays are discounted. The
ticket price is higher on weekends.
Metro Theaters
This complex has been in service in Mersin for seven years. There are seven
halls and 741 seats in total. Dolby digital system is available. A cafè and
a buffet are in the foyer, where music is also played. Discounted screenings
are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Reservation is available by phone.
