It made think how we take so many things for granted. Things like, central heating, hot water, landlines, holiday pay, sickness benefit or nipping to the shop for a bottle of HP sauce or a decent bottle of Shiraz.
On reflection, selling up in the UK and moving to Turkey without doing any research, is both, exciting and stupid! I wish I had a lira for every time I have heard someone say: 'if only I knew then what I know now'!
Do I regret it? No! As human beings, we adapt to our surroundings very quickly and learn to make the best of what we have. I may have swapped my HP sauce for mayonnaise, my hot bath for a bowl in front of the electric fire and my holiday pay for the high interest I earn at the Ish Bank, but what I have in return is far greater. I have the fresh air, the fresh food, the warmth of the people, no stress and the freedom to just be me.
I will pay my entrance fee at the gates of Apollo and pay my respects to a
wonder of Ancient History. One day, when I have long been dust, that thought
provoking structure will still be standing proudly, gazing down as others trundle
by, taking it for granted.
