Ms. Who's Apollon Temple

Photo: WOW Turkey
This morning, as I trundled by on the dolmus I glanced out of the window at the magnificent structure that is the Apollon Temple (Didim) and didn't give it a second thought. I've passed it every morning for 7 months; a structure that has stood the test of time, been plundered and burned yet still stands majestically, towering and proud.

It made think how we take so many things for granted. Things like, central heating, hot water, landlines, holiday pay, sickness benefit or nipping to the shop for a bottle of HP sauce or a decent bottle of Shiraz.

On reflection, selling up in the UK and moving to Turkey without doing any research, is both, exciting and stupid! I wish I had a lira for every time I have heard someone say: 'if only I knew then what I know now'!

Do I regret it? No! As human beings, we adapt to our surroundings very quickly and learn to make the best of what we have. I may have swapped my HP sauce for mayonnaise, my hot bath for a bowl in front of the electric fire and my holiday pay for the high interest I earn at the Ish Bank, but what I have in return is far greater. I have the fresh air, the fresh food, the warmth of the people, no stress and the freedom to just be me.

I will pay my entrance fee at the gates of Apollo and pay my respects to a wonder of Ancient History. One day, when I have long been dust, that thought provoking structure will still be standing proudly, gazing down as others trundle by, taking it for granted.

My wife, Carol, and I feel very much the same as you with regard to this magnificent people. We feel ever so close to all we meet, they join us as friends we’ve always had but just now met. Our families in the US have trouble with our grasp of this Country; I see you too, have the same grasp of Turkey. I’m avenged! My very best regards, Fred Moore
