Although the music markets in Europe and North America have wider and richer collections, those in Turkey have recently developed incredibly.
In November 2004, the jury of the daily newspaper "Hürriyet", who are DJs, musicians and music enthusiasts, chose the top ten music markets in Turkey .
Lale Plak
Lale Plak recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. It is a 40 m2 shop in Tünel,
and it has a rich archive of classical, jazz and world music. There are 10,000
CDs. Lale Plak doesn't sell pop albums, but you can find autographed CDs of
the musicians performing at jazz festivals in Turkey. If you wish to purchase
a special album, they will look for it and, if they cannot find it, they will
explain and offer suggestions for another album. Concert DVDs of various performers
are available. It is open every day between 09:00 and 19:30 and on Sundays between
11:30 and 19:00.
Dost Kitapevi
Dost Bookstore has six branches in Ankara and the one on Karanfil Sokak is reserved
for music only. They have an archive of 12,000 CDs offered under titles such
as classical, jazz, folk, soundtrack, new age, Turkish pop, rock and soul. Especially
rich is their inventory of classical and opera CDs. The salespeople are well
informed about music. There are two audio systems enabling the customers to
listen to all the CDs in the archive. It is open every day between 09:15 and
21:45 and on Sundays from 12:00 to 19:00.
Zihni Müzik
Zihni Muzik has been open in Kadıköy Akmar Pasajı for ten years. The archive
is composed of 10,000 CDs under titles such as world music, metal, alternative
and jazz. The jazz collection is very rich, with 4500 CDs. The store is 30 m2
and it also has a 600-piece record archive. It is open every day between 11:00
and 20:00.
BeyoÄŸlu D&R
D&R has 34 stores throughout Turkey. D&R BeyoÄŸlu was opened in August
2004. It has four stories and covers an area of 734 m2. The rich CD collection
concentrates on Turkish pop & rock, international pop & rock, world
music, jazz, classical, new age, soundtracks, electronica, Turkish folk and
Turkish classical music. There are 10,000 CDs. If the album requested by the
customer is unavailable, they provide a "Special Customer Order" and
deliver the requested album to the customer. It is open every day between 10:00
and 23:00 and on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 24:00.
BeyoÄŸlu Megavizyon
BeyoÄŸlu Megavizyon is the first store of this six-branch chain and was opened
in 1995. The goods are not limited to music; books, magazines, DVDs, VCDs, multimedia
and electronic products are also available. The 12,000 CDs are composed of international
and Turkish pop & rock, new age, soundtracks, jazz, classical, Turkish fantasy
and Turkish folk music. The salespeople are well educated.
Akmerkez Uzelli
Uzelli has eight branches throughout Turkey and the one at Akmerkez was opened
12 years ago. The 80,000 albums are classified under 26 titles, including pop,
rock, metal, blues, "chill out", new age, classical, opera and soundtracks.
They try to stock every album in print in Turkey. They also provide albums at
the request of the customer and if it is not found they provide a satisfactory
explanation. The store is located on an area of 170 m2 and is open every day
between 10:00 and 22:00.
Çiğli Uzelli
It is located at the Kipa Çiğli shopping mall in Izmir. They only sell music
CDs and films. The store has an area of 100m2 and has experienced salespeople.
They order products upon request and their archive of pop, rock and jazz is
rich. The customer can listen to the album before purchasing. It is open between
10:00 and 22:00.
Diapason
Diapason was founded by the "Sevda-Cenap And" Foundation to provide
income to the foundation and the proceeds are used for social assistance. This
two-story store has been in service in Kavaklıdere since 2000. The ground floor
is reserved for music, while the second floor is for books. Their music archive
is composed of 25,000 albums, and the jazz and classical music section is very
rich. You can order albums. Online shopping will also be available in due course.

polyphonic music, can be found exclusively here.
Ada Müzik
Ada Müzik was opened in Karşıyaka, İzmir in 2002 and is a favorite place among
youngsters on weekends. 16,000 albums are collected under 17 titles including
jazz, new age and classical music. Their products include CDs, cassettes, VCDs,
DVDs, books in Turkish and in foreign languages, games, accessories and gifts.
It is open every day between 10:00 and 23:00.
Room Recordings
It opened in Taksim in early 2004. They have a rich collection: from electronic
music to punk, from hard-core to the popular albums of 80's. The store has an
area of 12m2 and has 500 CDs. Heller brand plane and ship models and foreign
magazines are also available.
