Music
Music has the ability to reach the hearts of nations and particularly in Turkey, this is the case. Turkish Folk Music (Türk Halk Müziği) and Turkish Classical Music (Türk Sanat Müziği) are woven with the heritage of the Ottoman Empire, and they are still immensely popular listening choices of all generations. Many Turkish classical music composers have gained international recognition; Turkish pianists Fazıl Say, İdil Biret, Güher-Sühel Pekinel and Hüseyin Sermet are sought after in the world of classical music. Teens and young adults tend to have an affinity for Turkish Pop Music as well as a penchant for international superstars, not only in the Pop category, but also R&B, hip-hop, techno, funk, acid, reggae, and jazz.
Most music shops carry a wide selection of Turkish music, both CD's and cassettes. It's easy to find the latest international hits as well, though if you are looking for a lesser-known foreign artist you may find your search a little more challenging. Consult our Yellow Pages for a list of music shops and if they don't have what you're looking for, you can always order off the Web. Besides, illegal copies of almost all cassettes and CDs are exhibited on the counters of peddlers.
Moreover if you wish to learn playing an instrument or if you want to practice
if you are already playing a one or if you want your children to learn playing
an instrument, music courses listed in Rhythm of Town-Hobbies-Music section
are at your disposal. These hobby courses may also be a very good chance to
have new friends. A wide range of instruments from tabor to piano, from violin
to accordion, from saz (an oriental stringed instrument) to flute is available
at the music stores around Kızılay. Some more shops are can also be found on
Hatay Sokak , Meşrutiyet Caddesi and İzmir Caddesi.
