Neydi Kebap
by Zeyda ÜstünIt may be surprising for a Turk but kebap is not among my favorite dishes and I usually don't prefer kepapçı or fireside restaurants. However my son and my sister adore kebap and they drag me to those restaurants.
After staying at the hospital as a companion to a patient and eating nothing but sandwiches for two days I began to search for meat and then I saw Neydi Kebap sign board. The restaurant is a simple place located at the entrance of a building and be sure as a kebap opponent I was full of negative energy when I entered Neydi Kebap. Ordinary clothed tables and uncomfortable chairs did not help to ease me. And finally my request of "a bottle of beer" was turned back by their answer "We are not selling alcoholic beverage." I was about to leave but I was so hungry. Anyway I ordered my classical "kebapçı" meal. çöp şiş (small şiş kebap) and yogurt. The parsley, rocket, radish, onion processed with paprika and tomato paste, which embellished the table immediately, absorbed my negative energy! The yogurt was almost for three persons and I was a very happy woman when my çöp şiş was delivered. The şiş was very soft and the lavaş (thin bread) is the most delicious one I've ever tasted.
The owner of the restaurant is from Adana and he chops the meat between two knives to produce the mince used in the kebaps. The spices also arrive from Adana and he prepares and roasts the kebaps. İçli köfte is the favorite of the restaurant but since I was fed up I promised to taste it next time. There is also a pideci (pitta maker) in the restaurant. The only sweet is künefe. The chef told me that künefe is an Antep sweet and since it he was from Adana he confessed that he could not cook it very well. However it was very delicious. By the way the price is very reasonable.
Afiyet olsun!
