TALES FROM THE EXPAT HAREM TO SWEEP NORTH AMERICA THIS SPRING WITH A 15,000
KM 20-CITY BOOK TOUR
It's time to share TALES FROM THE EXPAT HAREM with the world!
Anastasia M. Ashman and Jennifer Eaton Gökmen -- Istanbul-based American editors
of the #1 best-selling anthology by foreign women in modern Turkey -- will travel
across the United States to launch the brand-new North American edition (Seal
Press, March 2006). Originally released in Turkey (Doğan Kitap, September 2005
and in Turkish as "Türkçe Sevmek"), the collection of true expatriate
tales of Turkish life has enjoyed 23 consecutive weeks on Remzi Kitabevi's English
best-seller list. Everyone from politicians to professors have endorsed it,
including experts on Turkey, the Middle East, expatriatism, and feminism.
For six weeks this April and May, the editors will mount a 20-city, 15,000 km
coast-to-coast U.S. tour. See the full
listing
of Expat Harem events. Ashman
and Gökmen are scheduled for 25 presentations in 10 states, at academic conferences,
major chain and independent book stores, cultural festivals, private social
receptions and Turkish-American associations. They will be joined by Expat Harem
contributors across America: Catherine Salter Bayar, Katherine Belliel, Ana
Fletes, Wendy Fox, Sally Green, Susan Holm, Nancy Lunsford, Dena Sukaya, and
Rhonda Vander Sluis.
TO BE LAUNCHED BY TURKISH CONSULATE IN NEW YORK, WITH FINALE AT MOON &
STARS
The American book launch will be April 13 in Manhattan's United Nations Plaza,
generously sponsored by the Consulate General of the Republic of Turkey, to
which 400 guests will be invited. The editors will return to New York City to
close the tour on May 25 with a special presentation at MayFest, a festival
of Turkish arts and culture organized by the Moon & Stars Project. This
tour finale at the City University of New York will be co-hosted by Middle East
and Middle Eastern American Center (MEMEAC).
· In between the New York events, the tour will take the Expat Harem to:
Public readings at major bookstores like superstores Barnes & Noble and
Borders in mid-Michigan; the world famous independent Cody's Books in San Francisco/California;
and BookSoup in Los Angeles, an establishment popular with Hollywood film and
television celebrities.
· Turkish American associations in California, Arizona, and Washington D.C.,
including a reception in the nation's capital city at Türk Evi on Dupont Circle.
· Turkish businesses like the family-owned premium cigar factory CAO in Nashville/Tennessee
which will host a reception.
· Readings, discussions, and book signing events for private social and business
groups in Washington D.C., New York City and San Francisco/California.
· Academic conference in Buffalo/New York
Mymerhaba readers are welcomed to meet the editors and contributors out on the
