Pickle Stores

Winter is pickle season! Almost all vegetables can be pickled and are delicious when served with several dishes. The jury of the daily newspaper "Hürriyet" chose the top 10 pickle sellers. Here they are:

Asri Turşucu
It was founded in 1913 and was in service in Fatih until 1938. Then the shop moved to Cihangir. Besides the classical pickles such as cabbage, cucumber, green pepper and stuffed eggplant, they also sell tomato, beetroot, string bean, okra, plum, carrot and pear pickles. There are 22 kinds of pickles and they say that the secret of the delicious taste is the unripe grape juice and Uludağ water they use when pickling. It is open everyday from 08:30 to 21:30.

Hasan Amca (Uncle Hasan)
Hasan Türksever founded the store in Narlıdere (Izmir) in 1950. The pickles are exported to various countries, ranging from the USA to Germany, and even to China. There are 50 kinds of pickles, and pickled corn, pinecone, artichoke, orange, tangerine, peach, grape, cherry, sour cherry and apricot are among the unusual choices.

Petek Turşuları
Petek has been serving in Balık Pazarı, Beyoğlu since 1992. There are 35 kinds of pickles. String bean, plum, unripe melon, tomato, beetroot, garlic, okra, medlar, cherry, apple, quince, sour cherry, egg, apricot, cauliflower, peach, pear and red cabbage are among the varieties. They explain that the taste of the pickles comes from the grape vinegar, lemon, garlic and the kind of salt they use. It is open everyday between 08:30 to 21:00 and on Sundays from 11:00 to 21:00.

Azeri Turşucusu
It is one of the oldest pickle shops in Turkey. It was founded in 1958 and has been serving the residents of Ankara since. Bay leaves, dill seeds and lemon salt are added to the water when pickling to provide a delicious taste. Azeri Turşucusu has customers all over Ankara and even from Cyprus. It is open every day form 09:00 to 21:00.

Hüsmen Ağa Turşucusu
One of the favorite pickle shops in Ankara, it has been serving since 1966. A kind of pickled cucumber called "çubuk turşusu" is the favorite. The pickle shop is open everyday from 07:00 to 20:00.

Vonalı Celal
Celal Öztürk lives in Vona, a neighborhood of the Perşembe district in Ordu (in the Black Sea region). He has been making pickles for 29 years and his fame has even spread abroad. The characteristic of his pickles is such that they are damaged when touched by dry hands. Mr. Celal's 120 kinds of pickles are on display at his restaurant by the seaside. He fills the orders from other cities by sending the products via the Turkish Post's APS service. He says that he pickles every herb grown in Anatolia. Foreigners touring in the Black Sea region are also among the best customers.

Içenbilir Hacı'nın Şalgamı
The shop was opened in Adana in 1947. They say that they owe the taste to the fact that they pickle the fruits in glass covers and the fermentation takes place in cool spots.

Soydan Turşuları
The store was opened at Beşiktaş Çarşı in 1935. They offer 35 kinds of pickles. Besides pickles they also sell hot pepper sauce and paste, sweet pepper and tomato paste, vine leaves for stuffing, vinegar, turnip juice and boza. They say the delicious flavor of their pickles comes from the celery leaves, garlic, vinegar and salt water they use. It is open everyday from 09:00 to 21 and on Sundays from 11:00 to 20:00.

Pelit Turşuları
Mr. Yusuf Pelit, the 84-year-old owner of Pelit Turşuları, has been serving in Kocamustafapaşa (Istanbul) for 57 years. They also have a branch in Kurtuluş. There are 25 kinds of pickles on offer. Quality vinegar and the ripe grape juice added give that special flavor to their pickles.

Merkez Şarküteri
Merkez Delicatessen was founded in Istanbul in 1966 and has 24 kinds of pickles. It is open everyday from 07:00 to 24:00.
