Picnic Areas

 Untitled Document The Daily Hürriyet newspaper formed a jury from authorities of the Metropolitan Municipalities and the Ministry of Forestry, tour operators and travelers in order to select the best picnic areas. Please note that these places are crowded in summer and on weekends.

Emirgan Korusu (Emirgan Grove)
There are municipal buses from various districts to Emirgan. There are an adequate number of picnic tables and toilets. Tap water is provided; however, you should bring drinking water with you or purchase some from the grove. Pembe (pink), Sarı (yellow) and Beyaz (white) Pavilions and the Old Stables are among the places you can visit in the grove. An admission fee is charged only to cars. Walking and jogging routes, a basketball field and a children's playground are among the facilities. Emirgan is one of the oldest groves in Istanbul and famous for its tulips in April.

Karagöl
Karagöl is 74 km away from Ankara; however, 15 km of the road is out of service. The natural spring water is potable. Toilets are available. There are wooden tables for picnickers and barbecues are allowed. There is an admission fee. The twenty-hectare volcanic lake creates a marvelous scene. Carp and trout fishing are available. The experts declare the lake to be a natural wonder.

Altındere Park
The park is 47 kilometers away from Trabzon on the road to Sümela Monestary. There are minibuses to Sümela at the stop in the Çömlekçi neighborhood. Besides the picnicking facilities such as tables, potable water, barbecues and toilets, tea gardens and restaurants are also available. Since it is a National Park, they charge admission. Hunting is forbidden. The pathways are suitable for walking, and the park is famous for its restaurants serving local food, its bread and its monastery.

Riva Deresi (Riva Stream)
It is located 17 kilometers away from Beykoz, Istanbul and buses are available. There are tables for rent; however, you can take your portable tables with you to the Kale area. The number of toilets is sufficient. Drinking water is available from the fountain in Riva. Water is available at the picnic areas. Vehicles must pay an admission fee, and entrance to the beaches is also subject to payment. You can rent canoes and paddle-boats to ride on the Riva Stream. The establishments on the banks of the stream meet all needs. It is a favorite picnic area since it is close to Istanbul.

Gala Gölü
Gala Lake is located in the Enez district of Edirne, 280 km away from Istanbul. You can reach the lake via the Tekirdağ-Keşan highway, and it is just 10 km from the center of Enez. The lake and surroundings are protected by first degree SIT status (an official designation prohibiting activities harmful to nature); therefore toilets, potable water, tables and barbecues are not available. There are nineteen kinds of fish you can catch, and goose and duck hunting is available.

Cumalıkızık
It is 15 km away from Bursa, and public transportation is available. The toilets at the picnic area are not very hygienic. Potable and drinking water, picnic tables and barbecues is provided. An admission fee is charged, and the 700-year-old Cumalıkızık village, which is just one kilometer away from the picnic area, is an interesting cultural center to be visited.

Sarıçam Forest
The forest is 25 km away from Adana and the area is surrounded by gigantic pine trees. It is possible to reach it by private vehicle; public transportation is not available. Toilets, thirteen fountains for potable and fresh water, two hundred picnic tables, a children's playground, a jogging route, and soccer, basketball and volleyball fields are among the facilities.

Enne Dam
The dam is located on Yoncalı road 17 km away from Kütahya. Public transportation is provided by the buses to Enne village. There are modern WCs, fountains of potable and fresh water and picnic tables. However there is no place to barbecue. A jogging route is available. Swimming is forbidden; however you can fish in the lake.

Teleferik resting area
It is 15 km away from Izmir, Konak. Transportation to the picnic is provided only by tele-cabin (a transportation system similar to a ski slope's chairlifts). WCs are sufficient, potable water is available; however, it is forbidden to bring food. The view is beautiful from a height of 406 meters. The area has modern establishments and provides fresh air.

Beynam Forest
Beynam Atatürk Forest is 45 km away from Ankara and public transportation is not available. After you take the Bala exit on the Konya highway and pass Beynam village, you can reach the forest after a 3-km climb. Among the facilities are a restaurant, a market, fresh water and WCs. You can bring your brazier with you and have picnic on the tables. Entrance is subject to payment.

The Second Top Ten Picnic Areas
Izmir - Bostanlı: It is 3 km away from Karşıyaka. There are picnic tables; however, barbecues are not available. Jogging and bicycle routes, a skating rink and a tennis court are among the facilities.

Istanbul - Belgrade Forest: It is the largest green area in Istanbul. An admission fee is charged for cars. Hunting is forbidden. Walking and jogging routes are available.

Adana - Dağılcak: It is 15 km from Kozan. You can reach it by Tufanbeyli "dolmuş". Swimming, fishing, barbecues, potable water, picnic tables and WC are among the facilities.

Izmir - Sakarya Park: It is only 2 km away from Bornova. Drinking water and WC are not available; however, basketball and soccer fields, tennis court and jogging routes are among the facilities of the park.

Istanbul - Büyük Çamlıca: Transportation is provided by municipal buses from Kadıköy and Üsküdar. Tables and WC are available.

Bursa - Inegöl: It is 65 km. from Bursa. Transportation is provided by minibuses from İnegöl. Water, WC, buffet and picnic tables are available. Entrance is subject to payment.

Adana - Osmaniye Dam: It is 35 km to Osmaniye. Minibuses from Kadirli provide transportation. Picnic tables, WC and potable water is available. The lake of the dam is suitable for water sports. Entrance is subject to payment.

Istanbul - Yıldız Grove: The municipal buses heading to Ortaköy and Sarıyer along the coastal road pass in front of the grove. There are picnic tables; however, drinking water is not available. Barbecuing is forbidden and the WCs are sufficient.

Ankara - Atatürk Orman Çiftliği (AOÇ): It is located 10 km. away from city center. Municipal buses heading to Gazi Mahallesi provide transportation. Tables, braziers, water and WCs are available.

Artvin - Kafkasör: It is 9 km away from Artvin. Transportation is provided by municipal dolmuş in summer. Potable and drinking water, WC and tables are available.
