Turkey's population is about 65 million. Although there has been a marked migration into towns, approximately 47% of the population still lives in the rural areas. A census was conducted recently, on October 22nd 2000 and it will take approximately 18 months for the new estimate to become official.
The major cities are Istanbul, Ankara (the capital), Izmir, Adana, Antalya and Bursa.
Modern Turkey consists of a highly young population, making it a very dynamic and energetic republic. Istanbul, which served as capital to three empires, is Turkey's largest city, with approximately 10 million inhabitants. Ankara the capital city has 3.69 million inhabitants.
Citizens of the Turkish Republic are, basically, a mix of many different ethnic
