Sailing in Ankara

Although Ankara does not seem suitable for sailing, Derinmavi Denizcilik (Deepblue Marine) has been organizing sailing courses since 2001. Marine and sailing courses of Derinmavi are certified by Turkish Ministry of Education and marine courses are both theoretic and practical.

The attendees are prepared for ADB Amatör Denizci Belgesi (Certificate of Competence for Operation of Pleasure Craft) exams as theoretical education. Expats living in Turkey also can take this exam. ADB is an international certificate valid for operating non-commercial sailing and/or power driven pleasure craft. In order to obtain this certificate one should be succeeded at the exam on theoretic knowledge. All bureaucratic procedures are followed by Derinmavi.

The duration of the long-term course is 4 weekends (Saturday and Sunday). However 3 or 4-day-long intensive courses are also available. The following items are studied at these courses:

- Seamanship
- Navigation
- Collision Prevention Regulations
- Meteorology
- Diesel Engines
- Safety Rules and First Aid
- VHF Radiotelephone Communication

Youngsters age 14 and up can participate in these courses and can obtain ADB certification allowing them to operate crafts up to 24 meters long.

Sail training is at Göcek with Derinmavi’s Bavaria model 38, it’s 12 meters long, and has three-cabins. Training groups consist of 4-6 people. The boat accommodates 6 people. There are three different types of sailing training.

2-day long basic training: suitable for beginners. The trainees stay overnight at the hotel or at the boat. Besides basic sailing skills, anchoring, man overboard and heaving to movement are among the agenda of the training.

4-day long intermediate training: Suitable for sailors that had basic training. Additional applications such as sailing between ports, night navigation and navigation planning are studied. It’s generally suitable for groups of 4-people and accommodation is provided at the boat.

4-5 day long training combining navigation and leisure: Trained sailors can participate in this training program with their friends or families. It is both for the experienced and leisure sailers.

Custom made navigations can also be organized upon request.
