Sabancı Holding owns 74 companies, which are involved in textiles, food, tourism, paper and packing, automotives, chemicals, tobacco, insurance, cement and banking. The Sabancı Group also has partnerships with some of the best known companies, such as Hilton Group, Bridgestone, Du Pont, Toyota, Philip Morris, Kraft Foods International, Bekaert, Heidelberg Cement, IBM, BNP, Dresdner Bank, Carrefour and International Paper.
Sabancı received an "Honorary Doctorate" from twelve national and international universities, and was awarded with the "Rank of Commodore of the Order of King Leopold II" of Belgium, "The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Star" by the Japanese Government, and the "Legion d'Honneur" by Jacques Chirac, the President of France, at the Elysee Palace in Paris in 2001. He was also chosen as the "Businessman of The Year" by the New York FABSIT Foundation.
Sabancı, who was in business sector for more than 50 years, wrote 14 books in which he spoke of his memories, information and experience. The royalties from his books are donated to Darülaceze (Almshouse) and Türkiye Spastik Çocuklar Vakfı (Turkey Foundation for Spastic Children). He also founded the charitable Vaksa foundation, which runs more than 100 health, education and cultural centers throughout Turkey.
His greatest contribution was to education in Turkey, and he founded "Sabancı University". His collections of paintings, statues and Ottoman calligraphy are exhibited at Atlı Köşk (The Equestrian Villa) in Emirgan, where he and his family lived for years and which was converted in 2002 into the Sakıp Sabancı Museum.
Sakıp Sabancı described himself as such: "I get angry when someone calls me only rich; I am happy with my social personality and my generosity."
Sakıp Sabancı died of cancer on 10 April, 2004. He was married, with three children and a grand-daughter.
