Sahaf Dil-Tarih
It is in Kadıköy and has thirty thousand books. The owner, Mr. Sami Ünal, delivers
his books to reputable science centers and universities abroad and also to those
who he believes to be really interested. He is planning to set up a web site.
There are old magazines, books on history, literature, art, philosophy and politics,
hand-written manuscripts, old postcards, certificates and imperial edicts. Old
books in foreign languages about Turkey, Anatolia and the Ottomans are also
available.
Sahaf Turkuaz
Nedret İşli has been selling old books for 25 years; however he opened his own
store in Galatasaray just two years ago. Besides schoolbooks, the store offers
about forty thousand books. The books are on history, literature, medicine,
mechanics and law. He informs his old customers when new books arrive and sends
books to customers living in various corners of Turkey and abroad via postal
services. Foreign books are available in English, French, Italian and German.
Most of the books are very valuable. Saturdays are for chats with the customers.
Librairie de Pera
Librairie de Pera organizes auctions mostly for antique books. The owner, Mr.
Uğur Güraçar, has been running Libraire de Pera for 18 years and he is an electronic
engineer. There are about fifty thousands books and most of them are on Turkish
history, literature and culture. A catalog with new additions is sent by post
every month to those interested. Sales are available within Turkey and abroad.
There are no schoolbooks.
Müteferrika
Mr. Lütfi Sayman started to sell old comic books 30 years ago. He is not fond
of technology, so he does not have a web site. Mr. Sayman is mostly interested
in history books. There are about fifteen to twenty thousand books at his store
in Kadıköy. Also handwritten manuscripts in the Arabic alphabet and certificates
are among his fields of interest. He informs his customers when a new work has
arrived. He also has been publishing a magazine called "Mütefferika"
since 1993.
Pera Aslıhan
The owner is Halil Bingöl, who began by selling comics in front of movie theaters
in 1966. He is an economist. He has some antique books but he mainly is interested
in books signed by the author. There are some Turkish-language books published
in Greek, Armenian, Hebrew and Arabic alphabets. In addition to the books, you
can also find various objects and papers such as bus and tramway tickets, old
cards and lottery tickets. He calls his customers when a new book arrives. He
sends catalogs throughout Turkey and receives orders by catalog.
Simurg
The owners Mehmet, İbrahim and Coşkun Yılmaz are interested in every book on
Turkey. They have over fifty thousand books on Turkish history, geography, art,
music, literature, strategy etc. Like every sahaf, Simurg has loyal frequenters,
and so they call those customers when new books arrive. They are also proud
of one of their customers, who has 50 thousands books. Simurg also sells books
via the internet; however you can access only eleven thousand books on their
web site and there are still 700 cases of books waiting to be posted on the
site.
Sanat Kitapevi
It is the only sahaf in Ankara which has been recommended by the experts. Turcologist
Ahmet Yüksel founded the store in 1987. There are nearly forty thousand books.
In addition to research projects on Turkey, the Middle East and the Balkans,
books on history, archeology, folklore, philosophy and magazine collections
are available. They also deliver books all around Turkey and abroad. Customers
are informed whenever a new book arrives. Sanat Kitapevi organizes book auctions
once a year.
Dilmen Kitapevi
Ibrahim Manav, a manuscript expert, founded Dilmen Kitapevi at Beyazıt Sahaflar
Çarşısı in 1964. The bookstore has a 184 sq.mt. storage room. Customers are
informed whenever new books arrive. They accept orders via phone and fax and
send them by freight to other cities and abroad. There are books in English,
Russian, French, Ottoman Turkish and Arabic. Most of them are on history, literature
and art. They don't sell schoolbooks. There are some works having antique value.
Enderun Kitapevi
Ismail Özdoğan opened this bookstore at Beyazıt Vezneciler after retiring in
1969. Although the shop is small he has three big storage facilities. He takes
note of the customer's requests, finds them in the storage facilities from among
60,000 books and delivers the books to the customers every Monday. They arrange
teatime meetings on the last Saturday of each month. The books are mostly on
history and literature and his specialty is history books written in the Ottoman
language. They don't provide foreign language books or schoolbooks.
Bahtiyar
Bahtiyar Kısmetli began to buy and sell old books for pocket money while he
was attending university. He founded his store in Kadıköy 13 years ago. He is
interested mostly in history and memoirs. He examines documents written in the
Ottoman language and informs those interested. He also searches for books or
documents upon request. Schoolbooks are not available.
