Shopping Malls

Tepe Nautilus
 Untitled Document Shopping Malls are places where you can shop without feeling the effects of weather conditions. They all have several cinemas, fast food courts, and of course a wide variety of famous brand stores. Nowadays malls have become a lifestyle. Most of them also offer entertainment and art centers. They are open every day between 10:00 and 22:00 and are incredibly crowded on weekends.

In 2004, the jury of the daily newspaper "Hürriyet", who are decorators, shopping columnists and store managers, have chosen the top 10 malls.

Akmerkez
Akmerkez was opened in 1993 and won "The Best Shopping Mall in the World" award from the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) in 1996. This four story mall is located in Etiler on an area of 180,000 m2. There are 41 escalators, 2 panoramic elevators, 246 shops, restaurants, a food court, and cinemas. "Mall Walking" takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 08:00 and 10:00. Akmerkez is visited by 1.5 million people every month. It has its own underground parking lot, but especially on weekends it does get crowded and it is very difficult to find a space.

Tepe Nautilus
Tepe Nautilis is the first thematic shopping mall in Turkey with its name, decoration and architectural features associated with sea and navigation. It was opened in Kadıköy in 2002 and is located on an area of 170,000 m2. The mall consists of 130 stores, and has a smart-parking lot, which indicates empty spaces, with a capacity of 10,000 cars. Cinemaxx cinemas have eight screens. The food court hosts 16 cafes and restaurants offering food from world cuisines. Sports International, which has a sea view, and a baby room are also among the facilities. Concerts and exhibitions frequently take place in the mall. 50,000 people visit Nautilus on weekends.

Metrocity
Metrocity is the first shopping mall to have direct entrance from a metro station. It is located in 1. Levent and opened in 2003. It is among the favorite malls with its four stories, Italian style decoration and fiberglass ceiling letting in the daylight. There are 130 shops, restaurants and cafés including Gloria Jeans and Starbucks. The parking lot has a capacity of 2500 cars. Metrocity also has 32 elevators, 32 escalators, 120 security personnel, 238 security cameras and is earthquake-resistant to a magnitude of 8.5 on the Richter scale.

Capitol
Capitol opened in 1993 in Altunizade, and the inner decoration was renovated including the movie theaters. Music and light shows take place on the pool constructed on the ground floor. It covers an area of 67,000 m2. There are 157 shops, a 14-screen movieplex, restaurants, and open and covered parking lots.

Profilo PAM
The old Profilo appliances factory was renovated and converted into a shopping center called PAM (Profilo Alışveriş Merkezi) in 1998. One-third of the 110,000 m2mall is reserved for social and cultural areas. A 7-screen movieplex with a capacity of 1500 people, three theaters, a 20-alley bowling and billiard hall with 20 tables are among the facilities of the mall. Recently a sports complex including a swimming pool has opened. There are 41 different alternatives of food, from fast food to Chinese.

Armada
Armada is the newest shopping mall in Ankara and was opened in 2002 in Söğütözü. The mall won "The Best Shopping Mall of the Year" award from the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) in 2004. This five-story mall was constructed on a 30,000 m2land. Armada offers 155 stores, 11 movie theaters including a 3D screen, 17 restaurants, a children's entertainment area and a parking lot with a capacity of 3100 cars. From time to time, concerts, dance shows and exhibits are organized. Free transportation is provided from various parts of town with 5 minibuses.

Carousel
Carousel opened in Bakırköy in 1995 and was named after the merry-go-round in the center. In addition to famous brands such as Fcuk, Tommy Hilfiger, Puma, Nike, Benetton, Replay and Diesel, it houses a gigantic Toys R Us, Mudo City and Mudo Concept. The ceiling is made of a 34-meter-high glass pyramid. The food court on the upper story is mostly composed of fast-food restaurants.

Migros Alışveriş Merkesi - Antalya
The mall was built by Migros Türk T.A.Ş. and opened in 2001. It covers an area of 50,000 m2and has three stories. The mall consists of 104 stores, 8 movie theaters, cafés, a fast-food court and a parking lot of 1300 cars. Free transportation from the city center and free wheelchairs for the disabled are provided. The mall won the special jury prize of "New Year Decoration of Shops and Shopping Malls" in 2003.

Konak Pier - İzmir
The Konak Pier building was designed by the famous Gustave Eiffel in the 1870s and has been used as French Customs, İzmir Customs, fish market and parking lot. The original steel construction structure were renovated with the latest technology and began to be used as a modern shopping mall in 1998. Konak Pier is the most prestigious center in Izmir with its movie theaters, restaurants and the famous brand shops. It is located on an area of 8,000 m2. A small parking lot is available.

M1 Tepe - Adana
M1 Tepe Adana Alışveriş Merkezi was built on a 270,000 m2plot of land, and is the biggest shopping mall in Turkey with its 78,372 m2covered area. M1 Tepe features such stores as Real Hypermarket, Praktiker Yapı Market, Tepe Home, YKM, Toys R Us, Zara, Ayakkabı Dünyası, movie theaters, restaurants and Crocus Entertainment Center. It is a favorite among families with children since it was built on a single story. The parking lot has a capacity of 3050 cars. Free transportation is provided from various parts of Adana.
