PUBLISHER'S LETTER
Dear Readers…Welcome to the 2005 annual issue of The Guide Antalya now available in English and Russian! Antalya is a major destination point for vacationers from Turkey, Europe, Russia and many other countries from around the world. With its growing reputation as the Riviera of the Eastern Mediterranean, the city is becoming increasingly more popular for visitors and residents alike.
This issue provides a glimpse of the "best" of what Antalya has to offer. In April, our Editor-in-Chief and a team of writers and photographer, traveled to this beautiful city to have a good look around and share with you what they saw and experienced. The city's newest developments are fabulous! AYTerminal opened in April, a new international airport terminal (the city's second) with the capacity to accommodate up to 8.5 million tourists per year. An amazing 42 new deluxe hotels and holiday villages are opening in 2005! Antalya is ready to host all its visitors - new and old.
You'll find in-depth information about Antalya and its surrounding provinces in our features Antalya: Six Million Visitors Can't Be Wrong and General Information to "Guide" You in Antalya. Burgeoning Alanya is a feature article on one of the major provinces in the Antalya region. This 'sleepy' town of 88,000 people undergoes a remarkable transition each year as more than 1 million visitors enjoy its pleasures.
With so many people traveling to the region from so many different countries with so many interests, we wanted to give our readers a taste of the variety of activities and events available in the region. The 12th Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival (June 11 - July 19, 2005) should not be missed by those who love the arts! Performances are held in the enchanting 2,000 year-old Aspendos Theatre located just 45 kilometers from Antalya. This year the festival includes performances by the internationally renowned Kirov Ballet Company of St. Petersburg and the Rome Opera & Ballet as well as performances by Turkey's own Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir Opera and Ballet companies.
The article, "Fun" with Kids in Antalya, was prepared for families traveling with children. Antalya's beautiful beaches are all wonderful attractions for children. In addition, there's Dolphinland, horseback riding at Or-Fe, and fun-with-animals at Eko Park. Read this article for more details about these and other places to take your children.
Beyond the Beach and "Down Under" is for divers and would-be divers seeking information on diving opportunities in Antalya. It also shares some important "do's and don'ts".
A must-read for those seeking tranquility while on vacation is Çıralı-Olympos: A Historical Seaside Paradise. Here you'll learn why this picturesque area, surrounded by sea and mountains, is especially ideal for relaxation.
Additional important and useful information is provided in this issue. For example, everything you need to know about Turkey's new currency, the new Turkish lira (YTL), is explained in Info. News from Around Turkey and Turkish "Delights" include happenings from round Turkey, while In, New & Interesting provides information on events and activities.
With this issue, we proudly present our new design for The Guide magazine series which was we introduced first with the publication of the March/April 2005 The Guide Istanbul. We hope you enjoy it. The inclusion of artworks by prominent Turkish and international artists throughout is a wonderful aspect of the new design. This inaugural issue's cover features Cannes, the work of prominent Turkish artist Fikret Muallâ Saygı. To Oya & Bülent Eczacıbaşı, we extend our most heart-felt appreciation for providing access to their private art collection and that of the Istanbul Modern Museum to enhance the look and experience of The Guide. We would also like to thank them and the entire Eczacıbaşı family for enhancing the Istanbul experience by their founding of the Istanbul Modern Museum in December 2004.
We hope you'll enjoy the articles in this issue and that you find the Information
Section useful in searching-out opportunities for wining, dining, sightseeing
and shopping in the region. Enjoy your trip to Antalya and we look forward to
seeing you in Turkey again!
