Publisher’s Note
Some cities in the four corners of the world have nicknames, i.e., Bangkok is called the “City of Angels”, Venice, the “City of Canals” and St. Petersburg, the “Venice of the North”. Bodrum doesn’t have a nickname, but if it did, I recommend that it be called the “Kingdom of meze” (appetizers). Meze and a meze sofrası is an integral part of life not only in Bodrum, but in all of Turkey. Just like there are many varieties of meze – hot, cold, grilled, fried, spicy, sweet… Bodrum too has many facets and flavors. Meze is also meant to be shared with friends and family. Just like meze is the food of conviviality and hospitality – so is Bodrum!
Bodrum is for every mood and for all seasons and is well on its way to becoming a preferred destination during all seasons. Even though it is very crowded and popular during the summer, yachters and golfers will tell you that the “best” time to be in Bodrum is in the Spring and Fall. The one year-old Vita Golf Resort in Milas is attracting golfers from around the world. People with homes in Bodrum also prefer to visit off-season and more and more retirees (Turks and foreigners) are setting up residence in Bodrum.
So, what makes Bodrum so attractive? Mild climate, cool breezes, the friendliness of the locals, good health services, easy access (land, sea or air) and location are just some reasons. Furthermore, the number of hotels, retailers, restaurants and bars keeping their doors open 12 months is increasing every year. Conversely, the noise pollution problem in some of Bodrum’s provinces is the biggest issue that needs to be resolved.
Congratulations are in order to Bodrum’s new Mayor, Mehmet Kocadon. His vision for this lovely resort town includes implementing programs and projects to keep Bodrum alive and thriving year round. The Guide Bodrum urges all businesses and residents to support his efforts.
So… dear readers... welcome to The Guide Bodrum 2009! As we have stated on our cover, Bodrum is for every mood and so are our articles! We have prepared two main features: What We Have Learned from Bodrum: A Mediterranean Story and A Guide to “Living Bodrum”. Writer and Bodrum lover Izzeddin Çalışlar did a wonderful job of summarizing Bodrum: from its history, with a lot of twists and turns along the way to present day.
In her article titled Bodrum’s “Backbones”: Thumbs Up to All of You”, our Editor-in-Chief Vildan salutes a number of establishments and their proprietors for consistently offering topnotch service: it is because of them (and others like them) that Bodrum continues to thrive year after year.
We round out this issue of The Guide Bodrum with our article titled General Information to “Guide” you in Bodrum and our sections News from around Turkey, Bodrumscope and Sights&Sounds where you will find the latest info on new openings, concerts and more.
Enjoy your stay in Bodrum and hope to see you again next year.. and the year after!
