Besides Devlet Tiyatroları (State Theaters), which perform the plays of famous writers, many private theaters attract the audience's attraction with their wide range of performances. If you enjoy opera and ballet you can watch several award-winning artists and listen to operas performed in their original language, Italian or German, on the stages of Devlet Opera ve Balesi (State Opera and Ballet). Moreover the tickets are much cheaper than in other countries. You can pick up your tickets the day prior to the event and then prepare yourself for a visual feast.
We suggest you attend the annually organized traditional theater festival. It is really interesting and numerous international theaters also participate. Since the language of art is its universality it may be a pleasing experience to attend the Turkish version of a Shakespeare or Brecht's plays.
Attention: If you are late in arriving to a performance a State Theater, you will have to wait until the second act before you can enter the theatre and your're your seat. Arrive in plenty of time so as not to be dissapointed. However if the salon has a balcony you may have a chance to watch the first act from there.
State and private theaters addresses are listed in our Yellow Pages.
