Famous Turkish poet and author Sunay Akın noticed a toy museum in Germany in 1990 and laid the foundations of the Istanbul Toy Museum with a toy horse he purchased from an antique dealer in the same year. He expanded his collection over fifteen years and has collected 4000 toys. Meanwhile he has made serious efforts to convert the historical wooden kiosk, belonging to his family, into a cozy museum. At last, the Istanbul Toy Museum was opened on April 23, 2005, the national holiday in Turkey which Atatürk, founder of the Turkish Republic, dedicated to children.

Two thousand toys are on display in this four-story old Istanbul house located in Göztepe, on the Anatolian side. The rooms are decorated according to the kind of toy. The museum has two cafes, one of which is located in the garden, one meeting room of 70 people, and a small shop where Sunay Akın's books and museum souvenirs are sold.

The oldest toy exhibited is a violin manufactured in France in 1817. A doll manufactured in the United States in 1820 and beads manufactured in 1860, one-century-old German-made tin toys and porcelain dolls are among the oldest objects of the museum.

The molds of tin toys made in Istanbul, cloth dolls produced by children living in various regions of Anatolia, cars made of wire and the heroes of the shadow theater (Karagöz-Hacivat) from the period of Sultan Abdülhamit II are among the most attractive objects of the museum. The toys and toy books, donated to the museum by famous actor and author Müjdat Gezen, who also worked in a toy shop when he was a child, are on display in a separate showcase.

Most of the toys in the museum are for boys and the rooms are decorated according to the kind of the toys. For example, the room where police toys are on display has a police siren on the ceiling and the window looks like a prison window, cut and with a bed sheet tied. The room in which trains and wagons are exhibited was decorated with original train windows, door and seats. The ceiling of the room hosting outer space toys is embellished with stars. You have to pass through a submarine in order to reach the toilets on the ground floor.
