Trevor from Side
Thanks to Trevor for sharing his experience in Turkey with us.
Tell us about yourself
I am 58 years of age and live in a small village in north Lancashire, bordering
Cumbria and North Yorkshire in England. I have worked with children for almost
40 years and intend to fully retire from the teaching profession next year to
spend most of my time in Turkey. I have a passion for History.I have been widowed
almost 10 years, my late wife also being a teacher. In some ways I am "living
the dream" we had.
What made you come to Turkey?
We had visited the Mediterranean region over 20 years, but 7 years ago I
took a holiday to Side near Manavgat, Antalya and so began my love affair with
Turkey! 2 years ago I bought an apartment on the edge of Antik Side, choosing
to live at the heart of the Turkish community. I usually stay there 3-4 times
a year as part of a phased move. I love the town in winter, summer and in all
its moods. Above all I love the people, culture and history.
What do you do in your daily life?
Although I still teach in England my time in Side is spent in reading, writing
and exploring Side, its environs and history. I consider that I am accepted
by the local people and spend hours in the town chatting and sharing Turkish
hospitality. I also travel extensively in the region and have seen and experienced
the "Real Turkey." I am an avid listener to the BBC World service,
especially the Everton football scores!
Family?
I have a son, Dom, aged 28 who is married to Katharine. They are on honeymoon
in Side as I write, having married in England. They tell me they love the area
where I have chosen to live and want to return for a longer stay.
Can you compare your first days here with today?
I have seen Side grow and expand over the years with an explosion in building
programmes and development. At the same time there has been a boom in Estate
Agents. Side is not far from merging with Manavgat!
Has living in Turkey influenced your approach to life?
Very much so. England has become more and more a rat race with so many Government
"targets" to met. Cost of living too is so high now. My target is
to retire to Turkey at the earliest opportunity! There is more emphasis on family
values and quality of life here in Turkey, although life is hard.
Turkish language?
I want to be part of the Turkish community and to this end am learning the
language. It isn't easy, but if you want to live in the country you have chosen
to be a part of then you have a responsibility to speak and understand the language.
All too often we rely on the native people to speak English or another language.
Let's talk about the region you are living in.
Side is steeped in history. It is on the doorstep and each day I am there
brings new discoveries. It is good to know that the ruins and history are being
preserved and maintained by Side Council. I enjoy time spent walking the beautiful
beaches and town. Bustling Manavgat is a maze of side streets - a shopper's
dream and place to explore for bargains!
What is you preferred characteristic trait of Turks?
Always willing to help. Many have become valued, trusted and loyal friends.
What is the annoying one?
Going around Side some of the shop keepers, whilst friendly to me as a local,
can be rather hostile in hassling tourists, especially new arrivals.
Turkish Cuisine?
The healthy life style of eating! I avoid the restaurants and lokantas that
cater mainly for the tourists.
Any suggestions to new comers to Turkey?
If you are buying property then take legal advice before buying or committing
yourself. The stories you hear about are, sadly, true sometimes. BUYER BEWARE!
If you are intending to live in Turkey and have dependents, then have a Will
drawn up by a Advocat who understands fully what you want and who will give
you a written translation in your language.
Any suggestions to people planning to visit your region?
Side and its environs are a rich harvest for visitors. Don't just lie on
the beach but explore the area by jeep or organised trips. Turkey will surprise
and inspire you by the beauty of its hinterland!

Very useful - thanks Trevor. I will be in Side 28 Sept to 5 Oct and again 4 to 20 Nov - if you are there then, could we meet for me to ask further questions about the area and lifestyle please?
