Tunalı Hilmi Caddesi

Tunalı Hilmi Caddesi, where the heart of the town beats, runs parallel to Atatürk Bulvarı, from Kavaklıdere to Akay. The avenue was named after Tunalı Hilmi Bey, who was among the first members of the National Assembly of the Turkish Republic and who was the first deputy to bring introduce the topics of workers' and women's rights to the assembly.

Anybody who has lived in Ankara has memories of this avenue. It is one of the most important shopping centers and meeting points in Ankara. Kuğulu Park, where swans brought from Beijing swim, and Karum Shopping Mall are the outstanding features of Tunalı Hilmi. In the 1960's, the park was within the borders of the present-day Polish Embassy, and there was a small creek running among the poplar trees. Kavaklıdere (Creek with poplars) district, where Tunalı Hilmi is situated, was named after these poplars and the creek.

Büklüm, Bülten, Bestekar, Abay Kunanbay and Buğday are the crowded streets intersecting Tunalı Hilmi. The most famous arcades along the avenue are Kuğulu, Seymenler, Ertuğ, Çelikler, Gümüşsoy, Uğurlu and Aynalı.

Flamingo pastry shop, Antik Tuğra, Subora stationery shop, Missuri dry-cleaning, plumber Fevzi Usta and glassmaker Uncle Mehmet (now Arkadaş Abajur), are among the famous stores on the avenue, serving the residents of the district for forty years.

Forty-nine-year-old Flamingo, at 93 Tunalı Hilmi Cad. is among the oldest pastry shops in Ankara. We strongly recommend you taste its special caramelized cake and the orange chocolate.

Yakut Saat (Yakut Watches) at the Kavaklıdere movie theater is another Tunalı Hilmi classic. Mr. ZühtüYakut has been selling and repairing watches since 1956.

Kıtır is another store that has been coloring the area for thirty years. Muzaffer Usta has been selling kokoreç there for fifteen years.

Uğurlu Pasajı was built 20 years ago and is known as Antique Bazaar. Dekorantik offers objects from Anatolia, while antiques from abroad can be found at Rengül Toral, Geronimo and İsmail Öğütlü.

Mr. Ali Osman Ceran has been selling flowers at 94 Tunalı Hilmi Cad. for thirty-seven years.

Oğuz Uzun has been producing and selling 15 to 20 kinds of chocolate, depending on the season, on Tunalı Hilmi for 17 years.

Cafes des Cafes, founded in 1995, is the first cafè on Tunalı Hilmi. It offers 25 kinds of coffee and an open buffet breakfast. Cajun salad and chicken with basil sauce are among the specialties of the cafè.

Kavaklıdere Sineması is the only movie theater on Tunalı Hilmi Avenue. It has a capacity of 650 and films are shown on four different screens. Sometimes it hosts festivals too.

Kavaklıderem Derneği (My Kavaklıdere Association)- (312) 426 02 06- , founded to protect the authenticity of Tunalı Hilmi and Kavaklıdere, aims to communicate with local authorities to solve the problems of the district. They decorate the Avenue on Bayrams, and organize cultural activities and aid campaigns.
