Turkish Restaurants

Beyti Restaurant
The daily Hürriyet newspaper formed a jury composed of gourmets and food writers. The following are their most preferred Turkish restaurants:

Hünkar
This restaurant in Nişantaşı is open every day from noon to midnight. Reservation is required for groups. Soft music is played off of CDs. The owner Feridun Ügümü looks after customers personally. The homemade dishes are delicious; quince stew, kol böreği and hamsili pilav (rice with anchovies) are among the specialties to be tasted.

Borsa-Boğaziçi
Borsa, at the Lütfi Kırdar Convention Center, is open every day between 12:00 and 16:00, and between 18:00 and 23:00. Reservation is a must. CDs provide soft music. Hünkar beğendi (eggplant pureè), keşkek, and vegetables with olive oil, especially pilaki (dried beans with olive oil), are all strongly recommended.

Beyti
Beyti was founded in 1945 and moved in 1970 to its new location in Florya, with 11 halls, 3 terraces and 5 kitchens. It is open every day from 11:30 to 24:00, except Mondays. Reservation is required. Beyti kebap and kuzu tandır (lamb meat cooked in a special oven) should not be missed. Experts call it the "pride of Turkish meat cuisine."

Hacı Salih Lokantası
Located next to famous shoe store Gutan on İstiklal Caddesi, Haca Salih is open everyday between 12:00 and 19:00. They do not serve alcohol. A fixed menu can be arranged for groups. Hünkar beğendi (eggplant pureè) and kadınbudu köfte (a kind of fried meatball) are the house specialties.

Kanaat
This 100-year-old restaurant at Üsküdar Square is open every day from 06:00 to 23:00 and serves 24 hours a day during the month of Ramadan. Except during Ramadan, there is no need for reservation. They neither serve alcohol, offer fixed menus nor play music. Furthermore, credit cards are not accepted. The house specialties are Uzbek pilaf with meat, elbasan tava and Turkish sweets.

Çiya
Çiya has three shops facing each other at Kadıköy Çarşısı. They are open every day between 11:00 and 22:00. Except for during Ramadan, reservation is not required. Şiveydiz, Şakiriye, Yuvarlama and Patlıcan Tatlısı (eggplant dessert) are worth trying. The owner Musa Dağdeviren personally serves customers. The salads, main courses and sweets are on open display, providing you with the chance to see the food first and then choose accordingly. Moreover you can also prepare your own plate yourself. There is no liquor service.

Feriye
This is a historical restauruant next to the garden of Kabataş Lisesi, with a stunning view of the Bosphorus. It is open every day between 12:00 and 15:00, and again between 19:00 and 23:00. During summer nights, the terrace is extraordinary. Reservation is required - even for lunch. Diners are entertained with live piano music. A fixed menu can be arranged for groups. Kağıtta pastırma and nemse böreği is among the specialties.

Hacı Baba
This is an old Beyoğlu restaurant famous for its Turkish cuisine. It is well known among tourists and therefore the customer profile is "multilingual"! Hacı Baba is open everyday from noon till 22:00. Experts appreciate the fact that they serve at least forty different types of meals every day.

Kaplan
This restaurant is located at Kaplan Village in Tire / İzmir and run by Hürmüz and Lütifi Cakır. Both classical and Turkish music types are played. Specialties include şiş köfte, melengeç, otlu bazlama and kabak çiçeği (squash flower) dessert. The experts say that it is the best place using local İzmir vegetables.

İkbal
Located in downtown Afyon, İkbal is open every day between 07:00 and 22:30. It is alcohol-free. Kuzu fırın (lamb meat baked in a special oven), çoban kavurma (meat roasted in its own fat with green pepper and tomatoes) and ekmek kadayıfı are the specialties.
