When you turn towards the British Consulate from the Galatasaray traffic lights on İstiklal Caddesi, pass through the Balık Pazarı, and after about fifty meters on the right Viktor Levi Şarap Evi will greet you with its compelling decoration. The wall paintings and fer forgé trimmings are sure to attract your attention and draw you in for some wine tasting, a trend on the rise in Turkey.
The wooden tables-for-two meet you as soon as you enter the lengthy lounge, and to the right, there are high benches that seem sort of like massive wooden blocks. A showcase exhibits an astonishing array of alcohol, and endless bottles of wine line wooden shelves.
At the end of the salon, a staircase embellished with fer forgé grape bunches leads you to an L shaped balcony. Again it is decorated with wooden tables that seat two or four.
The stairs next to the entrance lead down into a saloon, most often filled with groups and a favorite celebration spot for birthday parties.
Viktor Levi bottles several decent wines of their own that are worth trying, but if you want something fancier, ask for the list of imported wines. The menu consists of delicious cold and hot meze, various grill choices and pizza. Their güveç (food cooked in a casserole) is spectacular – any variety will be memorable. The special triangle bread is also scrumptious and worth the calories.
In short, Viktor Levi is an ideal spot to enjoy good wine and yummy food with friends (provided you can tolerate Turkish Pop music) a good choice for a quick lunch and even better in the evening, before or after a cinema.
