What gift to take when..

If you are invited to dinner: you may send flowers beforehand or take a bouquet of flowers with you. Fur Turks no flower is considered inauspicious its value is based on its price!! A bottle of good wine, a box of chocolates or a book would be an acceptable gift when invited to dinner and the amount spent should be based on your disposable income and closeness to the invitees. Keep in mind that most Muslim families do not drink alcoholic beverages. When in doubt, you can't go wrong with flowers, chocolates or a good book.

Visiting a newly married couple: depending on your closeness to them, it would be appropriate to ask them what they need. A silver photo frame would be a good choice if you don't know what to buy.

Engagement and Marriage ceremonies: Close members of the family and close friends generally present jewelry to the couple during engagement and marriage ceremonies. If you have more distant relations you are not obliged to do anything during these ceremonies.

Visiting a newly born: family members buy gold coins or small golden “MaŞallah”s according to their financial situation. Close relatives buy jewelry to the new mother.

Attending to Circumcision Ceremony: It is appropriate to give a gold coin called Cumhuriyet Altını,designer pen or a watch as a gift to the boy in accordance to your relationship with him or his parents.

Important note: The most appropriate present for marriage, birth and circumcision is a gold coin. If you are a family member, a “gold coin” is a must for circumcision. If you are not a family member, depending on the age of the child, a pen, toy, or book are appropriate gifts. However if choosing a coin (quarter, half or full) keep in mind that the closer your relation to the people concerned, the larger the coin à taking a quarter fold coin to a close relative would be considered rude.
