Istanbul European Choir was founded by a group of German people who lived in Istanbul, under the name of "Deutscher Singkreis" (German Association of Singing) in 1976. A group of French singers joined the Choir in 1991 and the name is changed to Istanbul European Choir. And afterwards, the choir got richer every year by joining of people from different nationalities.
The Istanbul European Choir had many conductors from different countries: Sylvenne Maire (France), Stephen Lomas (UK), Florian Mair (Austria), John Taylor (UK). Our current conductor is Ms. Gökçen Koray, who is the graduate of Sofia State Conservatory Musical Theory, Composition, Choir and Orchestra Conducing section. She also conducts Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Choir. She is accompanied by pianist Sergei Gavrilow who has doktora degree on conducting orchestra from Moscow University.
The main purpose of the foundation of Istanbul European Choir was to endear choral music and popularize great choral works. For this purpose, the repertoire often consisted of classical works. However, recently we have begun to diversify our repertoire with examples of works by popular foreign and Turkish composers . They also aim to add a new color to Istanbul's art life by choosing works that have never been performed in Turkey before.
IEC in 2008-2009
In September Istanbul European Choir is starting to have rehearsals like every other fall; with one difference this year: the rehearsal venue is no longer German Highschool but Teutonia instead due to the physical renovations of the high school building.
Istanbul European Choir is an amateur society. You don't need to deal with music professionally to join them. If you
- enjoy choral music and singing,
- have an adult voice,
- believe that you have a 'music ear',
- can read music,
you can join the rehearsals, no matter which voice group you belong to, or what nationality and profession you have.
The only thing you have to do is get through the auditions that take place right after the rehearsals on the first few weeks of each season. Rehearsals start at 19:00 and end at 21:30 each Tuesday. You can go and watch a rehearsal, and then try at the audition.
Rehearsal place: Teutonia, Galip Dede Cad. No. 85, Tünel
