Angelique´s Latest Trips

by Angelique Mawson – December 2008

Well it’s coming up Christmas time here in Ankara and the lst few months have certainly kept me busy. Ice Hockey season has started and today it even snowed just a sprinkle, totally normal for most of you except for those from down under as we never see snow in December :) I am holding out for a white Christmas, fingers crossed.

Trip to Pamukkale
Everybody who has the time should definitely take a weekend or few days to check out Pamukkale, its just a short bus trip (well ok about 8 hours or so) from Ankara, take any major bus company to Denizli for around 35 YTL then find a local dolmus to take you to Pamukkale for a few YTL and just name your hotel and they will drop you at the door.  We stayed at the Treehouse Hostel and it was great value for money, excellent home cooked food, clean rooms and also two swimming pools.

Pamukkale itself is a village like town, very touristy but still quaint and pleasant at the same time, the travertines are breathtaking and the fact that you can climb up them and walk on them is amazing in itself.  At night from the bottom they are well lit up and look like cascading snow.  We walked up the travertines at about 8am (cost 20 YTL) as it was going to be a really hot day, armed in our bikinis and back packs with water and snacks we headed up the hill.  Beautiful views over the Pamukkale village and walking through the warm natural spring water was amazing.

At the top of the travertines is the ancient city of Hierapolis which in itself is worth the effort huge ruins from approx 2AD - I mean walking down a footpath that people a couple thousand years ago walked was a truly humbling feeling.  The ampitheratre was perhaps the best attraction which had been restored and I have included a couple pictures to give you the idea. But if you are in Turkey this is an absolute must place to visit, relaxing, tranquil, scenic, cultural and historical - what more do you want?

Istanbul
Took a short trip to
Istanbul to see my fine Aussie friend off back home, and to meet up with my boyfriend from Istanbul at the same time. He showed us a really great day visiting the Princes Islands which I would never have known to visit without his suggestion.  Simply take a tram down to the waterfront at the bottom of Sultanhamet (which in itself is a great area with the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia, not to mention the Grand Bazaar) anyway get off the tram at the last stop by the water, go across the road and find the public ferry for the Princes Islands, for a couple of Lira you can stay on the ferry and visit all the Islands, or get off each time and pay again to get back on.

All the islands are nice places in he summer to hang out, drink coffee/tea or have a nice lunch or dinner away from the hustle of the city.  And yes while you relax you can view all the little ants (people) in Istanbul on the mainland scurrying about their lives :)  But a great way to spend the day very relaxing and great I am sure on any sunny day.

Cheap day out in Istanbul, maybe maximum 40 YTL you can view all of Sultanhamet attractions, tram and ferry rides, lunch on the Princes Islands and return tired but relaxed after a great day out.

Now on to Christmas in Turkey
We are having a traditional Christmas dinner and will share with my Turkish boyfriend, a few of our turkish friends and a few other strays hanging out here in Ankara including a Canadian, Latvian/American, and Estonian and maybe even an Australian.  So it will be mix of traditions but we hope to get a few basics right, being the
Turkey, the christmas tree and lights, egg nog and a day of friends, drinking, presents and a good time.

Already we have managed to find christmas decorations in the shops which was nice, crafted a few candles out of some floating candles and glitter glue - very nice.  Downloaded the Christmas music and some great of hits of the 70s, 80s and 90s to set the mood for a great day we hope, photos to come later. However I would like to know where I can find a Christmas Mass to attend on Christmas Eve as can’t seem to find any information on google at this point, maybe someone out there can help.  But if not all you ex-pats have a great Christmas and New Years we plan to head to Cappadocia for New Years so I will post a small write up and photos after I return. Until then take care and enjoy life in Turkey!!!
