Kınalıada
|
|
This island is more peaceful than the others due to the lack of electricity and water until 1946 and 1981 respectively. Today predominantly Armenians live there. The population is 2000 while it increases to 20.000 during summers. There are a few churches, a monastery and a mosque. There is also a rumor that the grave of Byzantine Emperor, Romanos IV Diogenes is on the island.
To be honest except for the villas and yachts of wealthy families there's nothing particularly interesting on Kınalı. The island doesn't have a hotel either but you can have a bite as everywhere in Turkey. There is no fayton in the island. Actually they are not necessary since it takes about 20-25 minutes to stroll all over the island. However motorboats carry lazy visitors to Ayazma beach. Once, when the Marmara Sea was clean Kınalı Ada had an enormous number of visitors, since it was the nearest island. The visitors often became impatient longing to embrace the cool water, and threw themselves off the first pier the ferry landed at. Now the islanders prefer to swim in their Club's or their private pools.
Well, although the number of visitors has dropped, the island remains always special.
The twin Sirakyan houses, across the pier are the only beautiful buildings
reflecting the island's architectural structure. The left side stretches to
the tea gardens and fishermen's shelter. The beach is on the right. The most
practical way to go to the backside of the island is to cross the street, to
climb the hill, to pass the meadow at which Hiristo Monastery stands and to
walk down to Ayazma beach.
