Do you like to visit libraries, to feel their tranquil and peaceful ambience while reading or researching? Besides state and municipality libraries, most of the universities, museums, embassies and consulates offer their facilities to you.

Here is an alphabetical list of well-known and rich libraries in Istanbul

Amerikan Kütüphanesi (American Library)
Open on weekdays from 10.00 to 16.00. Appointments should be made one or two days before visiting.

Arkeoloji Müzesi Kütüphanesi (Archeological Museum's Library)
This is the private library of the museum and they do their best not to refuse visitors, Monday to Friday 09:30 - 17:00

Atatürk Kütüphanesi (Atatürk Library)
This is the largest library in town and is as famous with Istanbul and Children's library. You have the chance to find all sorts of newspapers, magazines etc. It is open to the public, from Monday to Saturday 08.30 - 17.30

Beyazıt Devlet Kütüphanesi (Beyazit State Library)
Foreigners are allowed in only with private permission. This permission can be obtained by writing and asking for permission from: "Kültür Bakanlığı, Kütüphaneler Genel Müdürlügü, Necatibey Caddesi 55, Sihhiye, Ankara. Open Monday to Saturday 08.30 - 17.00

Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Kütüphanesi (Bogaziçi University Library)
Membership is necessary in order to benefit from the library. From Monday to Friday (during the academic year) 09.00 - 22.15. Sundays (during the academic year) 14.00 - 22.15

One of the most important libraries full of information on Istanbul and open to the public. Open only on Mondays and Fridays form 10.00 - 16.30

Istanbul Teknik Üniversitesi Kütüphanesi (Istanbul Technical University Library)
The library has the largest collection in all of Istanbul on technical subjects. Open on weekdays from 09.00 to 22.00, Sundays from 12.00 to 19.00, closed on Saturdays.

This library is open to only teachers and students.

The largest medical library in town. Open on weekdays from 08.30 to 16.10, closed on weekends.

Kadın Eserleri Kütüphanesi (The Women's Library)
The first and unique Women's Library and Information Center in Turkey, open since April 1990, is located in an 18th century Ottoman building near the Golden Horn allocated by the Municipality of Greater Istanbul. Open on weekdays from 10.30 to 18.30, closed on weekends but they may open on demand.

One of the largest thematic libraries in the city devoted to European Studies. "European Documentation Center" forms an important part of this library. Open on weekdays from 08.30 to 12.00 and from 13.00 to 17.00

A State library composed mostly of hand written works. Use of this library is subject to special permission. This permission can be obtained by writing to:
